Definitely a thing in Illinois where I was raised. It was something it took years to kick the habit of calling it pop when I moved to Florida. At this point I just refer to the brand I'm buying.

Everyone here in western Pennsylvania calls it pop

I hear it called pop far more often than soda.

Most people here in the UK call it pop or fizzy drinks, you'd get laughed at and mocked for saying soda

i would rather someone call the wrong soda "coke" since coke at least IS SODA

Pepsi is my first choice, it's not as sweet as Coke is. I'll take Coke as a fall back.
