On the phone they're like "Ok cool sounds great so next week yeah? Catch you then" And then 20 minutes later you get an email from them that includes the goddamn CEO, your line manager and I dunno, the pope or whatever and it says "Dear [your full name], we need this thing before the end of today, as you know and in reference to my previous email..."

The cumulative affect of receiving these sorts of emails over time must have shaven years of my life so far

Usually you only do that when another employee is fucking up and not getting things to you when you need them.

It just means they're getting ripped by said CEO (or whoever they CC'd), and so they need to ensure they use all the appropriate language to make it look like it wasn't their fault, but instead your fault so they don't get in trouble.

Meh, I find the only folks who CC my manager are people who are impatient as fuck or are rushing to get things done at the last minute.

It's all about CYA. Guessing the manager decided it needed to get done sooner.

Extensive experience with this client tells me that is exactly what happened (but in this case, replace manager with CEO). They had a meeting, CEO flipped out, and now the person I deal with is doing damage control.

Still ruins me day every fucking time mind you

Yep this is 100% how I use it.

Also I CC my own manager in as well so they know what problems I'm having and it also allows them to follow up with that person's manager if need be.

yup, CC manager = "I don't trust this person and i want documentation"

likewise, if your manager ask you to CC on something after you've already started it, that means "I think you're going slow"

if they ask you to cc upfront it means, "My boss thinks i'm going slow"

People usually do this at my job when theyre unhappy that my supervisor (department manager) tells them no, based on new department policy
