For years, I'd remembered there being a timed version of the manta ray fight in Mario Sunshine, and that that had been my biggest obstacle to beating the game. Turns out, I'd been conflating the manta battle with the timed beach cleanup mission, which had been my stumbling block.

the reason this never mind blowned me is because I remember the animated cartoon and thinking it was weird they pronounced it Beren-stain, lol.

anyways, yeah, nostalgic memories can get super weird. I remember I cant think of imagining parts of the game that werent there, but on a recent FFX playthrough i realized that I totally forgot that I had once ended up making it all the way to the penultimate boss. For over a decade I was convinced I was hard stuck on Mt. Gagazet, and thought it was weird when the boss fight there didnt look like the one I remembered from jr. high.

then I continued playing, thinking hey, these parts of the game actually seem oddly familiar, and ran into the boss from my memory right before the final dungeon.
