It's the fact that he's proven categorically that all this time, all you needed to do to stay in power was never admit shame, never show remorse, never accept guilt or responsibility. Just beam proudly when someone says you did something and now you control the narrative.

He's consistently controlled the narrative for 4 years with this method and survived through countless scandals that any decent president would have been ousted for. Maybe Nixon would have survived the presidency if he handled things like Trump does.

part of me wanted to believe that trump is a somewhat unique case in the hold he has on his base as well as the sheer unprecedented level of corruption, and that if he loses the GOP will dial back, but that's nonsense

republicans have gone fucking insane since obama. right wing populism/fascism is here to stay, and the rising number of them running for office on QAnon platforms or other utterly insane shit should scare the fuck out of people, as well as a guy like Josh Hawley who is positioning himself as the next big right wing demagogue
