The problem with this thinking is that now, you're just turning Korra into "ATLA but without an overarching plot".

That's why I don't really like Korra, I'll keep comparing it to ATLA.

I love LoK, but Bolin was a poor man's Sokka even on his best day. Admittedly this isn't a fair contest; Sokka stands in a league of his own because he was able to quickly develop beyond merely being the comic relief, and ended the series as one of its best characters. Still, while Bolin's humor can be quite good on rare occasions, it's more often distractingly unfunny.

Varrick is pound-for-pound the show's funniest character, but he also doesn't get nearly enough screentime to carry the show's comedic element.

They tried to make Bolin the comedy relief but it fell short because they used him for their shitty tween love triangle drama bullshit. Varrick was only funny in the recap episode in the last season.

Mostly Korra spent too much time trying to play Archie Comics with the terrible romance angle and less time exploring the world and legitimately developing the characters. Like, name one thing about Mako outside of the fact he dated Korra and Asami. Seriously, you can't.

TLA had much more emotional range and had deeper characters:

Aang: feels responsible for abandoning the Air Nomads and the world by running away; hides it behind a chipper attitude and secretly fears failing again.

Katara: bitter about her mother's death and wants to get revenge on the fire nation, which brings her into inner conflict with her more natural nurturing side

Sokka: a brilliant tactician who feels inadequate amoung his genius once in a generation bending peers and longs to prove himself as a warrior and man

Toph: genius heiress who simultaneously laments her birth right, longing to be free; but wishes she could be the daughter her parents want her to be at the same time

Zuko: RUFIOOOOOO!!

in comparison:
Korra; I'm the avatar and you gotta deal with it
Mako: I'm a brooding adolescent and I like girls
Bolin: I'm dumb, ha just kidding, I can lava bend
Asami: my dad's a dick.

He was honestly the worst character.

One of the few interesting things about Korra was Korra's development and her "lost" arc (which got completely handicapped by it's hand waved resolution) and seeing that the past Team Avatar was flawed and were terrible parents -- seeing that Aang wanted so badly to rebuild the Air Nation he put a ridiculous amount of pressure on Tenzin and neglected his other kids, as well as Toph just being distant as a parent, were some of the most compelling things about Korra. The New Team Avatar sucked and didn't get enough actual development outside of who they were dating/wanted to date -- and I get that's being a teenager, but the first Team Avatar had romance issues but that didn't detract from their growth as people.

But the humor of that episode is that the characterization there is half true, just reductive. There's honestly little more to Team Korra than what I posted. Korra is the only one with much more development than what I posted.

Korra having raw power but struggling with her self concept and her spiritual side is great, how they handled it was not. Mako just sucks. Bolin could have had a much more interesting development where he grapples with always being second banana to his brother and being viewed as a goof ball, when in actuality he's a very talented and gifted bender and great at thinking on his feet (sort of like Sokka in that he's treated as a joke but is actually incredibly intelligent), but instead he was... a movie star...and dated Toph's granddaughter... Asami I don't even know what they could have done anything with; she helps Korra discover who she is, there relationship is fine, just should have been fleshed out more and Asami should have been more of her own person.

The problem with Korra is it didn't take the time to develop the characters, outside of their romantic interests, like TLA did.

The reason TLA worked is because it felt like an adventure, you got to know the characters and see them grow. You don't get any of that in Korra because they waste time on pro bending and handwave away the solutions to all her problems (how Aang won in TLA not withstanding similar criticism).

Korra having no character development is the most common complaint I see about the show despite it being absolute horseshit.

Right, but this also means she spends the bulk of the series being insufferably arrogant and childish so she can grow out of it near the end. Shes just frustrating to watch in seasons 1 and 2, even beyond all of the romance drama bullshit shes involved in in those seasons.

Just because something happens in real life, it doesnt mean its enjoyable or meaningful to watch. I didnt see Korra taking any huge dumps at any point during the series and even that wouldve probably been more organic and enjoyable than the series romance was.
