N64 from what I've personally used, even though I played plenty of games on it. The stick drift was awful after prolonged use.

I also love the Xbox 360, but I went through the controllers like hotcakes. Never had that problem with any other console (I never had to buy a replacement N64 controller, although I didn't play it nearly as much as my 360), but the stick drift was just horrible. Really made precision activities in games feel impossible.

I've only seen that happen with third-party analog sticks. Never saw it with official N64 controllers.
All 4 of my n64 controllers are official nintendo controllers, my pack-in gray controller, and a red, green, and blue one that I bought from toys r' us...all but the red controller had loose sticks with a bit a drift by the time the dreamcast released. The red controller is the one I personally used the most since red is my favorite color, so I tend to hold myself back when I played games that needed to rotate the stick, but even that one begin to feel loose after super smash bros. came out. I lived and regularly gamed with my two nephews and brother during those years, so those controllers weren't surviving much longer use out of all of us had the dreamcast not came along and stole attention away from the n64, lol.

I still have all 4 of my controllers in a bag in my closet, I should take a picture of them all just to see how the sticks look. Its not pretty.

Funny enough, I used to use that big-ass duke controller a lot with the OG xbox. I was way better at capcom vs snk 2 EO and guilty gear x2 reload on the xbox using the duke controller's d-pad compared to using the remade smaller controller's d-pad. To this day, my brother and friends wonder how the fuck did I ever get used to using that thing, lol.

[Sega Genesis controller] Was basically just an NES controller with an extra button.
Have you ever used "the boomerang"? Have you ever used an NES Max? That shape is good ergonomic design.

Several consoles introduced in the 90s had poor pack-in controllers. Their inputs seemed to be designed more for simplified PCBs than for good interaction.

I've never held an original NES controller and have no desire to. The DS and 3DS give me enough of a taste of how terrible that could be. And they're larger than the NES controller. The evolution to SNES was seamless, add a few more buttons, round the sharp corners so it's actually comfortable. And then someone at Nintendo took a bunch of shrooms while talking to the Mario team, and invented the N64 controller.

That's being unfair, really. To be fair you were only supposed to ever use two arms of that thing. The left and the middle mirror each other in function and you use the one that suits your game. That doesn't make it okay though since playing a game that requires the stick, Super Mario 64 or any racing game spring to mind, changes the controller's feel in your hand and more importantly puts your hands too close together.

The N64 is an easy answer until you realize how many shitty consoles you haven't played lol.

It always amazes me how before the NES came out, developers wanted more buttons and said "uh... throw a phone on there?" That's how we got the INTV and 5200 controllers.

That is actually a good answer. I have a few games on my phone, Sonic 2 and Metal Slug, which are fun to have, but are impossible to play at any high level.

I'm really surprised that a company hasn't created some form of smart button technology. So you would have essentially a blank smart tablet(with no screen), and smart buttons, so you could move buttons to wherever you wanted on the tablet to help with button configurations. So take your basic NES controller configuration. Instead of having select and start in the middle you could put them under the A/B buttons, or even where the L/R buttons would be on other controllers. I don't know how that would work to hold them to the tablet... haven't thought that far ahead, but would help with people who have disabilities.

You are suppose to hold the Nintendo 64 controller in a certain way depending on what type of game you are playing. If for EXAMPLE you are playing a first-person shooter like Golden Eye, then you hold it the way seen in the first pic below (and there is the "Z Trigger" underneath which makes it easy for one's pointer finger to use it like a gun trigger, which was perfect for first person shooters).

If one is playing a fighting type game like, for EXAMPLE, a wrestling game (WWF No Mercy, WCW / NWO Revenge, etc) you hold the controller like the third / last picture below.

Some other games gave the option of using the way the controller is held in the middle second pic below (the Turok games gave players that optional control scheme to play their games in that way).

The Nintendo 64 controller was VERY COMFORTABLE and EASY to use if you used it in the correct way for whatever game you were playing. Most Instruction manuals and some games that had in-game tutorials or had the controls listed in an in-game menu would show how to hold the N-64 controller for their game.

^THIS.
The Nintendo 64 controller is an excellent controller. And Nintendo went out of their way to show people all the different ways to hold that damn controller. This below is an example. It came with the Nintendo-64 game F-Zero X. It seriously shows you how you how to hold the controller (this isn't complicated at all. If five year old me from the late 90's can figure this out, anyone can figure this out):

And as seen here from this 90's news program, this little 1st grader was able to figure out how to use the controller properly while playing Super Mario 64, even without reading the manual:

^ALL THIS.
It was extremely common knowledge back then during the 90's and 2000's on how to properly hold the Nintendo-64 controller. Most people who are complaining about how they didn't know how to hold it have either never held one or picked up one for the first time during the 2010's with no proper background knowledge.

For example, the commercial to Super Mario 64, which aired TONS and TONS of times on TV during 1996, shows how to hold the controller properly for that game:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vET-iI33fLM

Even in this other news report from 1996, they show a group of pre-teens inside a normal house (one of the houses of the news reporters) with a female pre-teen holding the controller the correct way while playing Nintendo 64's Super Mario 64. Holding the Nintendo 64 controller the correct way was common knowledge back then:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZsDwdUqPw0

Even the damn instruction manuals showed how to hold the controller, as seen below. Some games offered BOTH the first and second control schemes below, which was awesome if you were a left handed player and wanted different ways to control a game:

This is one of the earlier pics used in some manuals. They would do away with the bottom labels as more games started giving different options on how to play their games (which was great for both right and left handed players and people that felt more comfortable with different control settings). For example, the Turok games, which are first person shooters, gave people the option of using the first and second pic controls. Goldeneye's default setting was the first pic, etc, etc.

The Intel wireless series gamepad. This fucking thing looks like it can be used to choke someone out. Or maybe it can be used as a mini toilet seat for toilet training. Good grief...

I also agree that the N64 controller is actually quite good. The biggest issue is definitely the joystick wearing out, but the rest of the thing is quite normal to good and the Z button underneath is actually genius.

My problem with the controller was that the analog stick stuck out too much, was too hard, and had those plastic ridges. It always made my thumb sore. I remember I would put a waterproof band-aid on it just to act as a cushion. Also my hands were too close together when I held it that way. It felt awkward.

The N64 had some great ideas and innovations, but the execution was off. The Gamecube confirmed was so much better.
