I heard it has excellent combat and I'd like to play an open world game with good combat (that thing the Witcher iii and Elder scrolls games lack). I care less about story and more about atmosphere and being able to explore to my hearts content. Is this the game for me?

Edit. Dragons dogma DARK Arisen my bad lol

It's pretty bare bones outside the fun combat. I got addicted to it for a grip tho.

It's ok. I spent like an hour in character creator. When I went back I couldn't recreate the character I made which was annoying.

I wouldn't get hung up on the "open world" thing. Dragons Dogma has a shit story and pacing but amazing combat and enough to explore that you won't be bored. There hasn't been a really gripping "open world" in ages, tbh. It's just a AAA development ploy in order to pull people into timesinks these days.

I mean I just like the concept of a big world where I can explore and experiment with freedom but in general these games tend to have horrid combat/gameplay. It's quite depressing.

I'm a fan of DD and I recommend playing it if you are into western fantasy inspired action RPGs with fun but somewhat arcadish combat, but even then I wouldn't say the combat is amazing. It's just pretty goodish considering it has a bit of depth to it, but is also easy to get away spam most of the time and it is pretty unbalanced when it comes to classes and their overall effectiveness. For example Warriors suck. IMO 8/10 game.

I actually can't really think of another game that fits in the Dragons Dogma type category. Guess that's why people still want a 2nd after a full generation went by in-between. The combat really is one of a kind once it picks ups. I guess exploring isn't that off-putting. You do find loot and what not. You have to deal with weight management tho. Which I don't mind, I actually kind of like it. I loved Death Stranding, so that kind of speaks for that.

game is boring as fuck and extremely repetitive

I found it to be like one of the most overrated games of that generation and I was sorely disappointed when I played it because it was hyped to hell and back

It's a fantastic game. It has a very "Dark Souls" vibe to the world (especially the DLC area Bitterblack Isle, which is phenomenal) and the combat is awesome with plenty of depth.

I put over 175 hours into the game a couple years ago getting 100% and I highly recommend it. Plus it's on sale on Steam right now for like $9, which is absolutely more than worth it.

I only have 1 little bit of advice, and it's something that kinda got me hung up at first and could make it a frustrating experience if you're not aware. The game is genuinely intended to be played through multiple times with the same character. The way NG+ works is a legitimate game design that makes each successive playthrough genuinely different and it gets more and more rewarding as you complete loops. Your first time through, different regions of the map are just going to completely wreck your face. But as you complete loops of the story, you'll bring your character's power and your own experience through to the next run and you'll be able to pretty organically explore more and more of the world map each time, being able to tackle new side quests that were just too difficult before, etc. Just remember that if you're told to go into an area and when you get there some random scrub enemy basically insta-kills you, you are probably not meant to complete that sidequest this playthrough. Try coming back next time around and you'll probably have a better time.
