Pretty good game. I can see where my fav game Crash Bandicoot got all of it's inspiration.

Like the tropical visuals, has good atmosphere and music is good. Except I think the game somewhat tanks on the last world. The Caves and Kremtech worlds or whatever they were called were loaded with bullshit levels and I think not having the luscious tropical vibe hurts it a bit and the levels were a tad bland and like I said, were mainly gimmick levels that weren't fun to play.

Also the secrets are bullshit. It's mainly all just leaps of faith and hoping you find a secret. Don't think I'll go for 100% at least not without a guide.

I was like 5 when it first came out and at the time it was totally mind blowing, the graphics, the music so jaw dropping to my young mind. I beat it so many times as a kid. It was my fav compared to the superior DKC2, and DKC3 (which was my least fav).

i replayed it recently on the Switch and I see the flaws now. Graphics dont hold up compared to DKC2 and the level designs and boss fights are pretty bland. But damn that tropical setting and moody music still rules

I mean, I personally like it more than the sequels, hell it's the only game that actually features Donkey Kong himself! So weird when you think about it. But I also have more nostalgia since it's the one I played as a kid, didn't have the sequels back then.

Never thought that there was any similarity to Crash though, since tropical levels have been around in video games before Crash too.

It's not just the setting, it's the world map, the tokens, riding the hog, TNT, music is similar.

Hmm yeah Animal riding was a unique thing in DKC... did the Crash games do it too? I remember a level where you ride a polar bear?

Never thought of it that way, Crash taking inspiration from DKC.

All three of the DKC games on SNES were pretty great. I haven't played Returns, but Tropical Freeze was awesome too.

I changed my mind boiz. I'm going to try to get 101%.

I'm just going to farm 99 lives in the first level and just try and get all the secrets by jumping in every pit. I think I already know where the really hard ones are. Like the one secret in a bonus level and the level where you have to get Expresso, backtrack to the start and making a blind leap of faith.

Ive always wanted to play the series but keep hearing about its brutal difficulty. How would you compare the difficulty in this game to say, Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World?

It's really not that bad at all, especially if you're comfortable playing older platformers in general. You were probably listening to those dudes that compared Crash N Sane to Dark Souls. I never got very far in either of those games so I can't compare well though.

For it's definitely harder than Mario3/Mario World. Only took a day for me to beat it but I game over'd a few times. There are some cheap bullshit in the game. Likes enemies flying out from nowhere off screen and putting enemies right before level exits.
But it's a very simple game to pick up and play.

This is the first time I've heard anyone say DKC is brutally difficult. There are a few levels that can be, but it's by and large pretty simple IMO.

also if you do play remember you can roll off a ledge and jump mid air afterward. The game might be a lot harder if you don't know that.

Edit: this kinda reminds me of slide jumping off a ledge in crash come to think of it lol. Of course I don't think you get extra height, but you get a lot of momentum from the roll.

There was a jump in one of the later levels of DKC2 that murdered me like a dozen times before I learned this trick on my own in a controller-mashing rage.

It reminds me of Kiddy Kong's ability to skip across water in DKC3. I think you use it to get a single bonus coin in the entire game and that's it.

I had it as a kid, and don't remember beating it. I replayed it on the mini SNEs, and I guess I did beat because I remembered every boss fight. Not a very memorable game for me for whatever reason.

I remember Super Metroid completely.

A good hint is to carry the TNT barrels with Diddy and have him walk towards walls.
If it got a secret room, then they will explode in front of him.
And if I remember Barrel Cannon Canyon correct, then you must shoot yourself from a barrel into a wall after one of the letters, I think it was O.

I've always been of the opinion that situations like DKC, which requires you to die a lot just to figure out where bonus shit is, it's not cheating to look it up.

Cheers. I managed to find the secret i needed. it was a breakable wall with the tnt. I'll keep the tnt trick in mind

Thinking about it, I wonder if it works with a normal barrel as well. Cant remember if it did, was too long since I played the game.
