I read it in elementary school so out of curiosity I reread it. I realize that childrens literature overuses similes. It feels like if they removed every instance of a simile, itd feel like any other typical book.

Anyway, I found it incredibly touching. And I hadnt remembered the subplot about how Jesse wants to be an artist and does not receive approval from his dad.

And then, yes I did cry over the ending third, but not when Leslie dies, but rather, when the teacher consoles Jesse and talk about her husband who passed away. And also when Bill, Leslies dad, tries to console Jesse but ends up crying himself. As an adult, its probably because I can more easily relate to the adult characters than Jesse.

Also, did you know that an early chapter of the book uses the word bitched lol

Anyway, which should be the next childrens literature book I read:
Sarah Plain and Tall
Sounder
Walk to Moons
The View from Saturday

This was one of my favourite movies as a kid, but I can say I basically have zero recollection of anything from the book. It might be worth reading again.

Where the Red Fern Grows is another one of those children's books you cry to, although I've heard that one really doesn't read as well as an adult.

Im assuming these are childrens books; I should have clarified that Im only interested in rereading childrens books I encountered in school. I like the nostalgia of it, I guess (plus I was a pretty crummy reader back then so its fun seeing all the messages I missed in the books)
the list I had posted included books I had once read in school
