It's your choice how you want to approach battles, but you do get currency by not running from fights and they have fun flavor text and bullet dodging challenges. Though it's unique for a turn-based RPG, combat isn't exactly revolutionary (it's basically just an inferior version of top-down shoot 'em up games, platformers, etc. depending on the battle). The story is decent and the ending is cool, but it's not as good as its fans would have you think. --- I write Naruto Fanfiction. On the other hand, the gameplay wasn't fun to me. But I went down the youtube hole and watched all the endings, they really put a lot of thought into it. I appreciated it, I can see how it would have a cult following.
