Mostly monarchs. They lost like 75-80% of their entire population some 15 or so years ago due to a cold snap in Mexico and deforestation.

I recall seeing them way more often when I was young, but I wasn't on my phone all day back then, I actually rode my bike everywhere so I think it might just be some life bias.

Interesting. There tended to be a lot of monarchs where I grew up because there was a lot of milkweed, but I dont get back there during the summer so I'm not sure I'd notice.

I see a few every year. Mostly I see swallowtails though. Found a cecropia moth Caterpillar th pi ugh at my parents' house. That was very exciting. I had never been able to have one of those before. It is a cocoon now and had no signs of parasites so it just has to survive the winter. Had some giant silkmoth caterpillars on the tree in the neighbors' yard too. May have been cecropia, polyphemus or luna. They all eat birch and the caterpillars all get big. I didn't find any of them (tree is tall so probably too high up to spot). I only knew they were there because of the shit on the driveway >_>. Hopefully I'll be able to spot cocoons when the leaves drop (might even find them on the ground if polyphemus. They sometimes do that instead of spinning them in trees).

When I was a kid, all the kids in the neighborhood would go out and catch lightning bugs (fireflies). There were so many of them. Now it's a rare sight. You're lucky to see 10 all summer.

I don't recall any such time as I hate bugs and such a thing would be fresh in my mind. Skin is crawling as I type ugh.

My house borders a conservation so we get tons of wildlife. From crickets to love bugs to snakes to alligators to turkey vultures. But there's literally a forest right outside my house so that is to be expected.

I still see a ton of them here, the firefly population here was definitely up from the past few summers. I posted a video up a few months back of my front yard and I was seeing easily 100 flashes a minute average.
