Like it's just so obviously CGI

Did we really think this looked good back then?

Yes we did. Thats the main issue with cgi is it looks great at the time but will look outdated faster.

CGI looked better than stop-motion Simbad scorpion, but not better than animatronics.

I genuinely enjoy obvious cgi more than cgi that comes off as more natural. I like the way it enhances the inherent artificial nature of movies.

I hated 2000s / early 2010s CGI. It looked like a bunch of monsters, aliens, and robots had escaped from the PlayStation 2 universe.

In recent years, it's finally started to look convincing. There are still times where it's obvious the special effects on another plane of existence from the characters surrounding them, but those moments are becoming fewer and fewer.

I still like to see practical effects whenever possible.

Props always beat cgi.

Watch old indiana jones and you see how the sets make the movie.

The transitional period from practical effects to full CGI and back to practical with strategic CGI has been a real journey.

I think movies are in a good place now.

Indiana Jones IV is also a good example of why you should never use CGI for animals that actually exist.
