I think id like to get a cat eventually, but I've seen some really badly behaved ones, like knocking over shit/stealing food/etc. Is this just an issue of them being raised poorly, or do some cats just have personalities that make them cause destruction? Are certain breeds better behaved?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I don't have any experience raising animals. I don't want to end up getting a pet I'm not prepared for and resenting it. Ideally I just want a chill guy who hangs out and lets me pet him

get a cat that is not a kitten. adopt from a shelter like at least a year or more older. and you can get a better idea of what their like. kittens are a risk cause you have no idea how they will turn out

Yes. Just like a dog, train them at a young age. Typically male cats are generally more well behaved, the general community seems to agree on this. There's always exceptions of course. I can help you out a lot if you decide to get a kitty, i've had one in my life since birth, have had kittens, and currently have some.

Stealing food isn't really a thing unless the owners have encouraged it/let it happen.

Yes.

No.

Get a dog then. A dog will rely on you and will always be happy for the attention. Cats are moody and will let you know how they're feeling with violence. Or dead animals.

You seem to be confused.

You don't train cats. Cats train you.

some breeds absolutely are better behaved

we took in a stray British shorthair earlier this year, and Wikipedia describes their temperament like this:

They are an easygoing and dignified breed, not as active and playful as many but sweet-natured and devoted to their owners, making them a favourite of animal trainers. They tend to be safe around other pets and children since they will tolerate a fair amount of physical interaction, but as a rule do not like to be picked up or carried. They require only minimal grooming and take well to being kept as indoor-only cats; however, they can be prone to obesity unless care is taken with their diet.

this describes this cat to a tee. It does not describe our other cats, who are different breeds

And if you're thinking about declawing: Go chop off all your fingers and see how you like it.
Im not big on dogs >_> kinda can't stand the one im living with, and i wouldn't be able to take one on walks regularly. And dw I know declawing is shitty

The best advice I can give you is get them as a kitten

Roommate had a cat with a bad previous owner, and ended up hating everyone else except for him

You can't train a cat. It's gonna keep its personality. You can help guide them, if they allow it.

They keep a lot of their traits through life, but there's a lot of learned behavior too, particularly in how they respond to humans.

My first cat was definitely a shit. Adopted from a shelter as an adult. She had a litter and I kept one. He's also a shit but unintentionally. I think. In my defense, I was a teen then and didn't really know much. So if it's my fault he's a shit, well I can accept that.

I have another cat, rescued from the street. He's the most well behaved cat I've ever seen.

I have always raised sweet, loving cats.

Some have to be broken of bad behavior, especially the few I didn't raise as kittens. My calico rescue was a straight bitch, but I've fixed all that and now she's a sweetheart.

I'm convinced a lot of people just raise some shitty ass cats. Especially if they think they can raise a cat like you would raise a dog.

You must be doing some atrocious things to your pets to force them to lose their entire personalities. Shame on you.
