Is it legal to cross state lines to one without sales tax just to buy an expensive item to avoid having to pay it? Like say a $1000-5000 item

If it is (and not a vehicle or something with specific laws), it seems like small purchases, like if traveling would technically need to be summed up also.

Why would it be illegal?

But are you really saving money? How much are you saving after gas, and even on time spent on driving there?

Use tax is a sales tax on purchases made outside one's state of residence for taxable items that will be used, stored or consumed in one's state of residence and on which no tax was collected in the state of purchase. If the purchase would have been taxed if it was made in the purchasers state of residence, then use tax is due.
