Running out of good horror movies to watch (pretty much seen them all) and I kind of figured TV shows might have caught up to the movies as far as horror goes, so after a little deciding, I picked Hannibal (might try American horror story next). I'm NOT a big tv show guy. I stopped watching TV with anime and all that stuff about 12 years ago. I hated serialized shows stretching out stories and making 200+ episode shows. I can't binge that.

So 3 seasons, I can do. How's the writing? How's the portrayal of Hannibal? I've always liked the first movie, had some growing respect for the 2nd movie, didn't really like the 3rd and we won't talk about the 4th. With that in mind, will I enjoy this show?

Also: I only watched one episode of Dexter and hated it so I don't think I'll be going back to that. Funny enough, this show is similar, is it not?

The portrayal of Hannibal is perfect. I ended up preferring Mads over Hopkins in the long run tbh

Just watched the first episode. Hopefully it's suffering from pilot janks because the constant cold cuts into every scene was strange. I feel that once Hannibal came on scene, the camera did everything it could to make him as obvious as possible, from his opening scene to the copy cat killing to the obvious feeding jack the lungs of his latest kill.

I hope they can make him waaaaaaaaaaaaay more subtle in the future.

Also: Jack needs to calm the fuck down.

I agree with this, but other than Mads, the show is pretty bad--I still watched all of it though

The show is nonsensical gibberish that exists to create a meaningless backstage to watch one actor go all out.

Some times it works, but most of the time I don't really think so. I also would have preferred to explore the Hannibal Lecter character in a more subdued manner similar to how Brian Cox played him in Manhunter, rather than turning Anthony Hopkins' theatrical and over the top performance up to 11. I already thought Hopkins overplayed it in the sequels.

The show is not subtle with Hannibal lol. I've been watching through it recently. You kind of need to take it at face value that Hannibal is the friendliest, most charismatic, and least suspicious person alive, because that's how the characters treat him while the show itself is screaming every time he's on screen.

It's an almost supernatural horror show dressed up as a mystery show, so the actual investigations don't really hold up to scrutiny.

yeah it is not a subtle show at all. but it was really good.

edit: I shouldn't say not at all. like other people said, it's up front with Hannibal. but there's some other stuff that you might not notice if you aren't paying attention

I didn't really find Brian Cox's portrayal of Lector (or in this case, Lecktor) was very good because he rushed the lines. There was no methodical to his performance. It was the work of an unexperienced actor (in 1981). He didn't know how to treat the part properly.

it's not really meant to be subtle to the watcher, it's a show called hannibal. We know what it's about, we know who hannibal is. There are of course other subtle things that are meant to be to the watcher, but i'm not sure why you would expect a show called hannibal to hide who is hannibal and what he does.

Anyway, I love the show. Love Madds. I think there are some good arcs that take place in season and cross seasons. Some badness because tv shows gotta tv show, but the good outweighs the bad by a lot. It is a surprisingly gory show for what i believe was a broadcast tv show when it aired.

Aint no nipple hiding on the netflix version lol. There's some pretty good gore/blood splatter too from the episodes I saw. Definitely not something allowed on regular tv.

I'm watching it on Netflix and there are no nipples. Unless Canadian Netflix is different. Lots of nudity, but strategic nipple placement.

There was a nipple in the first episode, just as the scene cuts into them looking at a cadaver on an autopsy table.

Yeah ah its not subtle. Hannibal practically winks at the camera whenever he says something like Id like to have you for dinner some time.

I saw the nipple and tried to remember what it looked like on NBC, not sure what they did.
