Back when gaming was still new, directional input was originally handled using vertical sticks. These were nicknamed "dick-sticks" due to their shape, and then later shortened to "D-sticks". When Nintendo invented the D-pad, they kept the letter "D" because they didn't know enough English to understand why it was there in the first place and assumed it was somehow derived from the functionality.
