Ok, in the first mission (WW2) you find out that Japan as a super mega weapon that they call a "scalar" weapon (probably in relation to Tesla's supposed scalar energy statements). and it somehow kills everyone in the test area or something

...

But later in the game the weapon is clearly just an ordinary EMP... ... ... ... how would that hurt anyone in WW2? Aside from maybe their radioman the weapon should literally do NOTHING to anyone.

Storywise, that mission was confusing and I could not recall how that squad or the story relates to the modern day characters that we later play as. Was there some tie-in between the two periods of time?

Haven't played the game, so not sure, but do you see the effects during the first mission, or only hear about it? Could it have been propaganda to make people worried about facing them?

One of the best MP games ever.
Shame they just stopped the series.

I only recalled seeing corpses as we approached some sort of testing area and being in the middle of a test.

In the first mission you hear the buildup/charging of the weapon and then the island starts falling apart due to bombings, and your team hijack a docked submarine to hide from the actual activation (which is hidden)

You are later informed (pretty early so not spoiler) that EVERYONE from that mission died as a result of that weapon...

But later on you learn : that it was an intentional suicide mission to discover the nature of the weapon so your mission 1 team probably only died because they were inside the submarine and would have been safe literally anywhere else
