That is, they should be responsible for their behavior that started the fire, but not held liable for the extent of the fire. They're so big because of global warming, and fires are so goddamn common right now on the west coast that it's clear this shit would be happening even if they didn't start it. And I say this as someone directly effected by it.

It all comes down to intent and recklessness.

If they truly didn't intend to start this disaster, what do you want from them? Prison? What does that solve?

Related to the people who started the fire. You're logic is terrible if you get in a car accident you don't get excused by saying "they were going to die some day" that doesn't make you innocent and you should be held accountable for your actions.

I reckon they must be rich considering their lack of self awareness and throwing a party during a pandemic. I do think that they shouldn't be jailed considering they've been cooperative with the police and they have a baby on the way. However, they definitely should be fined, put on probabtion, and required to do community service.

It makes an example out of them for the rest of the world to not be fucking stupid, if anyone tries doing something similar expect to go to jail this will help prevent future fires.

I'm not related to them. I'm actually related to people displaced by the fire, and am in danger of being displaced myself. My hometown is one of the evacuation zones, though thankfully still only level one. I'm also not referring to any specific ones.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be punished or fined, not even saying the punishment shouldn't be stiff. I'm just saying I don't agree with charging them for the entire extent of the fire, when it's extremely clear that these fires would be a problem right now even if they hadn't been idiots. The conditions are so bad that it's pretty much guaranteed major fires would've happened, and they aren't responsible for the conditions.

This logic fails in the same way that making an example out of criminals fail. People that do this are either not thinking what they're doing could start a fire, not in a state of mind to think about it, or the kind of person that doesn't think they'll be caught or doesn't care about consequences.

Agree with all of this. I'm not actually threatened by the gender reveal fire, but I have three other major fires near me :/

for the most part, the absurd extent of the fires is not really their fault at all, it's placing too much of the blame in the wrong place which makes an example out of the wrong people and kinda distracts from the real issue going on
