Medical interference is ultimately an aspect of religious freedom that I agree with, because even if it's stupid, it is ultimately a personal decision based on faith that impacts the individual and their feelings - and no-one else's.

I think it's harmful and short-sighted, and I feel bad for people who feel that the color of their soul is more important than a procedure that lets them live their life for a little longer. "Medicine bad" is such a shitty, backwards idea, and having that idea perpetuated by religion is extremely unethical. I think the world would be better off without these stupid ideas, but ultimately if this sort of thing conflicts with someone's personal faith - or personal wishes as a whole - they should be given the bare minimum amount of respect and they shouldn't be treated in a way that they disagree with.

One notable aversion to this idea is Scientology's aversion to psychiatry, because Scientology is a cult and they shouldn't be tax exempt. Fuck Scientology. I also have misgivings for spinoff religions from Christianity like Seventh Day Adventists and Jehovah's Witnesses, but at the end of the day, as long as they aren't hurting anyone, whatever. That's what they chose.

I don't agree with TC's grandma's decision, but it's that choice that should ultimately be protected under religious freedoms. That's a personal decision, for right or wrong, and that decision needs to be honoured.

Yeah I dunno man. I support anyone's right to refuse any treatment they don't want. But I never got the whole JW and no blood transfusion thing. But I am not a JW so I guess i'm not expected to.

Wanting to take revenge on a hospital for saving your life by hurting it financially seems perverse.
If it was any country that didn't bankrupt people for needing medical aid I would agree.

Have fun getting sued into oblivion for violating clearly laid out directives then.
I didn't say that the doctors should have ignored the directive, I said it's a shame that the directive existed to begin with because of people letting religious beliefs take the place of logical and rational thought.

I just wanna point out that the poor lady can't even communicate her wishes -- so her overall quality of life may be low.
And to be honest, a lot of you people are just being flat out nasty, and a good portion of you wouldn't say that kinda stuff to a family member's face.

It's strange to me how people are debating about this, as to me this is a black and white issue. I'm not remotely religious but it's obvious the hospital is in the wrong. That should be clear no matter what your beliefs are. It would be disrespectful to your grandma not to sue.

People have a right to decide which medical procedures they wish to receive. She had a long-standing directive not to perform a blood transfusion and it doesn't matter what her reasoning is. You absolutely should be pursuing legal action

If she was a minor I would strongly disagree and parents should not be allowed to let a child die because of religious beliefs.

There are many cases where Hospitals have successfully gone to court to allow them to treat children in these cases. Or even to not continue needless treatment, when is just making the child suffer.

Religious reasons 100% should be ignored when in regards to a child, as there life and welfare is more important than whatever belief they have. When they are an adult they are free to be a moron and let themselves die if they want though.

Sorry man. My dad was adamantly against chemotherapy and they convinced us to put him through it only to find out later that the doctor actually never thought it would help him anyway and was just doing it for his own research purposes. Put my dad through a couple months of hell for no good reason.

On the contrary, everything they believe is okay or right if it doesn't affect anyone besides themselves. Not that this applies to children, teenagers, and many young adults, but it definitely applies to an 80 year old woman.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

Yeah, and his mind was largely gone by that point (like extreme short-term memory loss) so he barely understood what he was consenting to. Thankfully, at least, he had about 6 months after getting off the chemo where he didnt have to suffer through it. (Though of course he was suffering through lots of other pain.)

And you would be wrong, just for the fact that the only perspective of "right and wrong" that matters in a case like this is that of the patient. Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but unfortunately it doesn't mean anything. Now if this was a situation like refusing vaccination then your opinion absolutely would mean something, as that affects other people.
