Yes. It was announced at the beginning of Friday's lesson, announced again at the end of the lesson, and it shows up on student dashboards when they log into the online platform.

And it's just the second week of school.

It's common practice?

Plus we're already on an alternating schedule where I only see a given class every other day until we return in person. They had more than enough time to do a 20 problem assignment.

You could not have homework but have optional review problems for students to work on, but very few students would actually do those tbh...

But at the same time you would gain a lot of extra classtime not having to check homework or go over homework every day.

  1. That's assuming that school should be a peripheral for work. Which, granted, many people do treat it as such, but I argue that schools should value education (which includes academics, the arts, human development/health, and social-emotional learning) more than "career readiness".
  2. Homework is a means for students to practice the material learned, and provides teachers with formative assessment information about student progress.

We were required by the district to have a planner specifically for recording homework assignments. With modern technology there's even *less* of an excuse since you can whip out your smart phone and plug in your homework assignment in thirty seconds on your Google Calendar before you leave for break.

Just to be clear -- my argument is not with you, but with the education system. My mother is a teacher and i have the upmost respect for your profession.

To me, the arts, human development/health, and social-emotional learning are all a part of career readiness. I don't see them as distinct. Education can and should be valuable and applicable in a work context, soft skills in particular.

Homework doesn't offer any of this. By infringing on the child's social life and freedom to learn how they so choose, homework compartmentalizes the student applying knowledge in a real-life setting. When a student could be learning through something they actually enjoy, instead they're spending their evenings absorbing that learning is taking them away from what they would like to do -- things that are valuable in a work setting. It's anti-educational.

There's also the aspect of what homework does psychologically. It teaches children to be "good worker bees" who are always on call. This is not a healthy work habit and leads to an increase in stress and a decrease in creativity and innovation in the workplace. When I hire people, I don't want drones. I want people who come up with creative solutions. Instead what's coming out of schools now is often a lot of stressed, work-addicted young adults and it makes me sad:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2014/03/13/homework-hurts-high-achieving-students-study-says/

Homework also disproportionality benefits children with rich, highly-educated, and/or happily married parents, who already have advantages. I understand that you're forced to assess the student but how can you be sure you're assessing them and not their parent's aid on the assignment? Is a poor student whose single mother works 3 low-paying jobs and gets home at 11 pm given the same expectations as the rich student with the live-in nanny and the full-time mom with a Master's degree? That's not a level playing field and challenges the idea of our education system as a meritocracy.

I know you're just doing your job (and likely have a lot of homework too!) but there's so much toxic and biased about how we evaluate kids and their education.
