How did he "flash" it across the screen? did he point it at the screen as a joke or something? people have been suspended in class for goofing off. Blame the dumbass incells for making goofing off with a gun zero tolerance.

he is a black boy. that's important to note as the article later mentions. This could have ended in a death, with all that's going on lately with cops and black people. truly fucked up for the school to do that. why didn't the teacher or principle call one of the parents first and talk to them?

Yea that's what they should have done. Basically swatting the kid was incredibly dangerous.

In late August, the seventh grader was attending an online art class when a teacher saw Isaiah flash a toy gun across his computer screen. The toy in question is a neon green and black handgun with an orange tip with the words Zombie Hunter printed on the side.

The teacher notified the school principal who suspended Isaiah for five days and called the El Paso County Sheriffs Office to conduct a welfare check on the boy without calling his parents first.

I didnt know what was going to happen. I didnt know if they were going to bust down the door, said Isaiah. My heart was beating super fast.

It was really frightening and upsetting for me as a parent, especially as the parent of an African-American young man, especially given whats going on in our country right now, said Isaiahs father, Curtis Elliott.
Curtis wife Dani Elliott was equally furious with the schools decision to notify her, only after deputies were on their way to the familys home.

For them to go as extreme as suspending him for five days, sending the police out, having the police threaten to press charges against him because they want to compare the virtual environment to the actual in-school environment is insane, said Dani Elliott.

A sheriffs department report confirms the teacher, said she assumed it was a toy gun but was not certain.

If her main concern was his safety, a two-minute phone call to me or my husband could easily have alleviated this whole situation to where I told them it was fake, said Dani.

Neither parent knew the school was recording their sons virtual class but said the district refused to provide the video to them when they requested it.

The Elliotts said their son was traumatized by deputies telling the 12-year-old his behavior couldve led to criminal charges and might in the future if he were to do something similar again.

He was in tears when the cops came. He was just in tears. He was scared. We all were scared. I literally was scared for his life, said Curtis Elliot, fearful that deputies might overreact to having the school principal tell them a young Black boy was potentially armed with a gun.

Administration with the school district refused an interview request from FOX31 but did email a statement:

Privacy laws prevent us from sharing students personal information which includes disciplinary action, the statement reads. We follow all school board policies whether we are in-person learning or distance learning. We take the safety of all our students and staff very seriously. Safety is always our number one priority.

The district is now receiving dozens of critical comments on its Facebook page. In response, the district denies its response was based on race or discrimination but seemed to acknowledge it recorded Isaiah Elliots virtual class without parental permission.

to be fair its not like real guns can't be painted. at the end of the day don't play around with guns like that. On the schools side, don't jump to conclusions and call the cops to break down doors like that. Parent's should have been notified and let the kid know not to make jokes alluding to shooting people, toy gun or not, and the school's zero tolerance policy that involves sending trigger happy little dicks to the house should be changed.

its a BB gun (see label on side), not a "toy gun".

Quick google search:
"BB guns can kill a person. High-velocity BB guns, which have muzzle velocities higher than 350 feet per second, can increase this risk."

This particular model of bb gun is spring loaded with intent of shooting a gel target. It is not Co2 powered, and an extremely low velocity bb gun.

  • 1911 spring airsoft pistol with 12-round magazine
  • Built-in hop-up BB system
  • Built with metal parts
  • One Zombie Hunter gel target
  • Cleanup is easy as the BBs slowly fall into its own collection tray
Just FYI on the "BB guns can be fatal" argument

zero tolerance policies force teachers and administrators to report these to the authorities no matter what.

again, its not the teachers faults or the administration. Its the POLITICIANS who create these laws and bills that people have to enforce that drive people nuts.

first of all it does not look real

Also imagine if the boy got shot. Or what if his dad, a grown black man opens the door surprising cops who were told there is a gun in the house. Should this student lose his father because of some idiot teacher freaking out?

The kid had an airsoft gun. We better send aggressive men with real guns to the house. Maybe they'll think it's real! What could possibly go wrong?

I've heard tale of zero tolerance policies resulting in a student who got jumped and knocked out cold, getting suspended for being involved in a fight. And this was mid 2000s
