NWC on NES is arguably the most valuable video game cartridge of all time due to its rarity and it's been a widely known fact among game collectors. Meanwhile Pokemon Red sealed is only worth over a hundred dollars at most...

Pat the NES Punk famously owns two of these fuckers.

it's a graded (and a highly graded at that) copy. it's probably worth a lot more than you'd think at first. but still, we're talking maybe 10% of the NWC cart.

not that i necessarily believe any of this.

We're not talking a copy of Super Mario World with a 9.8++ rating, it's Pokemon Red. If it's even worth $7,500, it's still a bad deal. There's no way that given ENOUGH time to pass, that the Pokemon Red with a 9.8++ rating will be worth the same as a grey copy of the World Championships. There was just too many copies of Red made.

but that's not the number we need to look at. how many are still sealed? how many of those will grade 9.8 or 10?

don't underestimate how crazy people can get over high grades.

and to be fair, i did say it was likely a 10:1 trade in value (or worse). I was just trying to explain the difference to all the people who thought this was any random $35 pokemon red cart.

$12,500 is the highest price listed for a pokemon red cart, graded listing. It was a 85 SILVER rating, so who knows, this deal might be fairer than we thought. Oh, and it sold.

looks like a bit of an outlier, but I'm not at all surprised to see so many in the middle 4-figures. i just wish the Video game graders would have population reports. VGA supposedly does, but I can't find it. doesn't look like WATA has one at all =/

What in the fuck why would you do that. Even if Pokemon Red had more sentimental value you could buy a sealed copy for a small small fraction of what NWC is worth.

Pokemon is a dime-a-dozen for collectors tho, NWC is like a holy grail item. Trading away an NWC for Pokemon is like giving someone your car in exchange for a bicycle.

I agree, how is one supposed to judge their copy against the rest without an accurate detailing of the amount of cartridges are still out in the wild, what their reported grade was before they went to the wild, and how many of them have sold in the mean time? As fascinated as I am about these deals, getting into one myself is mind boggling because unlike recent "Collectors Editions", these carts are the real deal but getting your foot into the door must be difficult. The chances of buying a fake must be pretty high.

I can't pretend to understand the reasoning behind trading a NWC for a Pokemon Red cart unless maybe this buyer feels that Pokemon will grow beyond what the NES meant to people for a time period, potentially giving a Red rated 9.8++ the chance of becoming worth more?

The problem with this is that this likely won't happen in this trader's life time. Maybe 120+ years from now, that cart will be worth mega bucks.

You guys are underestimating the value of a pristine sealed Pokemon Red. Yes there are a million copies out there but a perfect condition one is getting rarer every day. The value might be worth more than NWC one day.

Don't forget that a pristine Mario for NES sold for $100k last year.

it's entirely possible this pokemon cart is actually rarer than the NWC. high grades can be incredibly hard to get (at least, in the markets i'm familiar with.), and can carry some serious multipliers.

a small tear in the shrink wrap. a scuff from the shelf. a missing bit of glue. oops, 9.5, 9.3, 9.0. 20 years ago, these things weren't all arriving at the stores as 9.8s. now, how many of the best of the best stayed pristine since then?

Are the grey carts of NWC graded at all? Since they were prizes (and runner up prizes at that) these carts might not have gotten the attention that retail carts get (or the golden NWC carts, for that matter).

Either way, TC is showing how little he knows about both the NWC and the graded cart collectors community with this topic XD

i'd imagine a lot of them have been graded, yeah. i think i saw a WATA-6 as i was researching a little while ago.

but the funny thing about grading is, the rarer it is to start, the less of a bonus a high grade is going to give you. at really low raw pops, grading becomes almost more of an archival and authentication process than anything.

Edit for full disclosure... I'm not actually a graded video game collector/retailer. I've thought about it, but my knowledge is from sports cards, ccgs and comics. i imagine they have a lot of overlap, but if someone with better knowledge wants to correct anything i've said, by all means =)
