Which would you take?

Either way, you'll be paid for 2000 hours per year. If you take the not working option, you cannot work a different job.

I think that's part of the intrigue of the question.

Pretty sure that not only is that way more than fruit pickers make per hour, fruit itself is not ready to pick on a year-round basis, so there are a lot more hours here than the usual fruit picker. The only way I see the hours working out is with the agreement that you could be bussed anywhere in the US, thrown in temporary housing in those places while the crop is ready, and requiring at least 11hr/day shifts.

This one is a lot more interesting. Fruit picking can be, depending on the fruit, some of the most rewarding work a human can do.

That said, unlike fast food, which is pretty much the same no matter where in the world you are and what company you are used by, fruit picking has a wide variety of work conditions and physical prerequisites.

I'm assuming generally ok working conditions in a place where fruit grows year round (coconuts in a tropical setting?) or a three month period of killer work with the rest of the year off. I would probably go for those, sure.

Why is it so hard to read and just answer the question.

Yeah, I'll take the $10 and use my free time to rob these fruit picking losers. They'll be so tired from picking fruit for 2000 hours they won't be able to stop me.

Assume for the $20 job you have average insurance and for the $10 to do nothing you have average insurance via obamacare exchanges.

How you gonna stop me from breaking the rules? You gonna pay the hypothetical police? Better post their wages too so I can decide whether I'd rather be that cop or just pay them off with weed money in this scenario

10 an hour. That's still enough to cover my share of the rent + utilities, get enough food, and occasionally buy new games while having much more time for doing things I actually enjoy (like getting through my backlog) instead of slaving away 5/7 days of the week

$10 to do nothing then

If you're working physical labor you're gonna get hurt at some point from either accidents or just wearing yourself down
