https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/04/us/children-living-with-parents-pandemic-pew/index.html

The number of American young adults living with their parents is at or near an all-time high, and the coronavirus pandemic is likely the reason, according to a new analysis.
A new report by the Pew Research Center found that a majority of young adults -- 52% -- lived with one or both of their parents in July. Pew's analysis of monthly Census Bureau data notes that this is higher than any previous measurement.

"Before 2020, the highest measured value was in the 1940 census at the end of the Great Depression, when 48% of young adults lived with their parents," says the report, published Friday. "The peak may have been higher during the worst of the Great Depression in the 1930s, but there is no data for that period."
Pew defines young adults as 18- to 29-year-olds. The number of young adults living with parents grew to 26.6 million in July, an increase of 2.6 million from February, Pew said.

A lot of young people still live with their parents because they don't want to make any changes to their lifestyles and spending habits.

I work with a dude who's almost 30 and still lives at home despite making $20+ an hour. He's constantly putting money into his car, getting tattoos, buying new clothes, going out to bars etc.

But if you ask why he still lives with his parents he'll say it's because he can't afford to move out.

Is it really worse than shelling out rent to a landlord? As long as you are helping out around the house..

Who the fuck wants to live with their parents well into their adult years?

I get that some people need to, but why would you willingly choose that?

The house my aunt and uncle bought back in the 1980's was $30,000. Today, it's estimated value is around $450,000. I have to use this as an example because my parents were never rich enough to buy their own house, and had to rent until their deaths.

Anyways, my point is, the cost of living has risen exponentially over the past 40-50 years while the working wage hasn't really risen at all. So back in those times, most people could work any job and make enough to support their family and buy a home. Nowadays, that same situation is almost impossible.

Depending on where you live, $20 an hr hardly pays the rent.

This is an attitude that's unique to Americans. Many people actually get along well with their parents and don't have a dysfunctional family. Beats irresponsibly shelling out for bloated rent and housing prices.

It sounds like you're jealous he's out there livin life spending on things he enjoys while you waste most of your check on being cucked by a landlord since your parents never loved you.

My parents are divorced, my dad would literally charge me to live with him and my mom lives with her boyfriend who while he likes me doesn't want to live with me. I never even had the option of living at home, usually didn't come back during the summers of college either.

I wasnt able to move out until I was 30 years old. I love my parents (and I actually visit them weekly) but, god, after living on my own for two years, I cant imagine going back to live with them lol. Theyre great, but I definitely prefer having my own space.

This country is complete crap, they don't even bother to hide the fact that they're completely fucking you on living expenses, on wages, on everything. They simply don't care. Just how work is tied with health insurance, how is that right? If you get sick, which is highly likely if you work around folks, you have to take work off, pay for the Dr visit and pay for your insurance every month. You're being robbed blind completely. All while rent prices are way more than 25% of monthly income, and tenants can't negotiate rent either. It's absolute cronyism at its very best. Then there's literally a law that taxes you if you don't have health Insurance, so the government is taxing you for living in the United States, it's absolute crap and everyone knows it.

Why do you think most people live with their parents? They value their life. Work is no longer secure, so you don't have a stable pay check, you can get canned for a God damn tweet or fb post, there's a crap ton of fees, and every employer exploits their employees for their labor. So yeah, I don't mind living with my folks and looking like a loser if it means my family lives a much easier life than having to play this stupid ass game everyone else plays of musical chairs.

Lmfao

I'd rather be "cucked by a landlord" than live dependent on Mommy and Daddy well into my adult years.
