I know a bunch of the guys went off to war but the tribe itself looked way too small and didnt really have buildings in TLA

The North being really fucking far away is also another plot point throughout the show though.

The Fire Nation focused on attacking the South over the North. Namely because Water is next in the Avatar cycle and they don't know what happened to Aang. (Same reason why Zuko is in the Southern Water Tribe's area to begin with.) Why they decided on focus firing the South and not so much the North isn't really explained.

In LoK, the Southern Water Tribe had time to rebuild and has a pretty decently sized city.

Still felt like the fact that they were constantly attacked and reduced to like 20 people tops they should have done something despite the distance. I mean most of the southern warriors did go off to war and most likely met with northern tribe people at some point

No i understand they were attacked, but i guess what im thinking is that southern tribe looked damn near annihlated while the north looks lile LA to them

There was a whole ass war that they were fighting by the time the Fire Nation attacked again when the Avatar appeared. The damage was already done and the Fire Nation probably wouldn't have attacked again if the Avatar didn't appear. Remember the only reason they were attacking was so they could take out all of the waterbenders, and they pretty much thought they did.

Also, most of the characters outside of the main cast in the show don't do much long distance traveling up until the last season.

Fair enough, it was just weird to me that the north looked like Ba Sing Se while the south looked smaller than the average earth nation village.
