Can someone explain why theyre hated so much? I see them called franchise killers pretty frequently. Again as a casual watcher I can see that theyre not great movies, but what do they do that disrespects the rest of the franchise so harshly?

Old star trek is dry. It's more about politics and philosophy. You'll have entire episodes dedicated to a debate, or a trial. Many obstacles are solved with words, not violence.

The movies are great action flicks, but they throw away everything the series is about to draw in a general audience. They flanderize the cast so everyone can have their moments until the whole thing is a giant charactature of the series itself.

It's mostly because the newer movies are a lot more like Star Wars than they are Star Trek. Star Trek as a franchise has always been less focused on action, and more on exploring different cultures and character development.

Its a CGI explosion galore. Everything is urgent with no time to lose.

Like hey slow it down a notch and turn the glaring lights down a bit.

The old show and movies made efforts to be philosophical. The reboot movies are typical JJ meathead bullshit.

Yeah thats pretty much JJ Abramss signature. If that isnt what old Star Trek is like then they shouldve hired someone else.

They hired Abrams specifically to reimagine Star Trek for a general audience. As much as old fans loved classic Trek, the franchise was dead. Each new series did worse than the previous and the movies were flops. For better or worse, Abrams brought it back front-and-center as a mainstay sci fi franchise.

Lol, this. The first movie would have been ok without the extreme amount of lens flare that made it at times unwatchable. The casting choices were pretty inspired.

Into Darkness was fucking garbage though. Not only was it a dumb fan-servicey pseudo remake of Wrath of Khan, but it did some really moronic things-- like when Cumberbatch reveals his real name he practically winks at the camera but the people in the movie are like 'Who?' because they've never met him before.

On top of that, it was written by a 9/11 truther psycho who put in this whole lame allegory that was even more stupid.
