They're full of valuable metals and can net you significantly more money at a metal recycling shop than most items
It's harder to do nowadays since a lot of cats are integrated into the exhaust manifolds, meaning they're right up there in the engine bay. Used to be you could just shimmy under a car with a hacksaw or Sawzall and make out like a bandit ... Copied to Clipboard!

Reminds me of the time my friend volunteered to replace the alternator on my car since it was dead in the parking lot; security roll up, ask us to see our badges because it was like 8 PM and the parking lot was empty and it probably looked suspicious as hell. They check our ID's and then clear him to keep working after explaining that people were just "stealing catalytic converters out of cars there" >_>

So, a catalytic converter contains either Platinum or Palladium. Based on my reading Palladium is more common in gasoline/petrol powered cars. Platinum is more common for Diesels.

Diesels don't have cats so much as they have particulate filters, but they serve a similar purpose. They're also worth a hell of a lot more - a remanufactured DPF for a Ford 6.7 costs about $5k after its all said and done (and that's a reman, not brand new)
But they're also larger and harder to steal ... Copied to Clipboard!
