Keep in mind, they aren't handicapped. They have all of their limbs intact, look generally healthy, and moving about holding a cardboard asking for money, because they're down on their luck. Do you give them some money? Ignore them? What do you generally think of them? Feel sorry for them? Feel they're good for nothing lazy bums?

The most I ever give them is a cigarette. They never turn down a cigarette.

When i went to Germany though, it was really striking how different the beggars were. They didn't walk up to you and feed you some fake story to try and convince you to give them money, most of the time they would just plop down in the middle of a sidewalk and hold a cup out for hours

It's a huge problem here in Nashville and the vast majority of them are scammers. I'm part of a local Facebook group that tracks them and exposes them. It's rather funny when they approach me and I know their name and before they can even say their first sentence I say "oh hey so and so, your house burn down again?". They scurry off like cockroaches.

How nice is this cardboard?

But anyway, I use to give them a few dollars. Now I never carry my wallet or I only have 20s and Im not money bags. I don't mind helping out tho and don't really care if it's a scam. If you lack the pride and respectfulness to scam people like that, you're doing worse than me somewhere in life and those couple dollars will probably make you happier than they make me. And I usually put it in the context of just not getting a small luxury item like a Frappe or a energy shot. Doing without one of those for one occasion isn't gonna break me.

This is pretty much my take, and I'm inclined to give some portion of the cash I have on me. The reality is I'm at a stable point where I can afford to occasionally have the wool pulled over my eyes.

It's the new pandemic.

The other day an NBA (think Kevin Durant) looking guy asked me for $.50.

That guy was probably healthier and younger than me so I have no idea what's going on outside.
