it's about 838 million dollars.
This means you have to pay barcelona that much just to be able to sign him. The weekly wage he's asking for is a 1 million a week.

Don't know if I'd pay that much for a 33 year old.

That 33-year will make you billions in tickets and merchandise. It is practically a no-brainer to pay him, the only question is if he wants to play for you.

He has a year left and no one will pay for the release this year because of that.

Messi has said he'll sit if he has to. So just let him go. He played his whole life for the club

There's a lot of confusion about release clauses in footballer's contracts. In Spain, clubs are required to add one to their player's contracts. If someone offers the amount in the clause, the selling club has no choice but to accept that offer.

However, if the club has no intention to sell the player before their contract is up, they can just add a ridiculously high release clause like in this case. It doesn't mean FCB are actually expecting 700m euros. It's the theoretical maximum of what Messi would cost, not the actual asking price. If clubs want to buy him for less, they would have to negotiate with Barcelona. Just like how transfers work in most other countries.

He doesnt make that much. Its how much a team would have to pay to buy the rights to him. Im sure he gets a percentage but the amount is more a deterrent

in this case though it most likely is. Why would Barcelona, or La Liga, want their main cash cow not to be there for another year?

True. La Liga probably lost a shit ton of cash when Ronaldo left.

If Messi is dead set on leaving (which seems to be the case), Barcelona has two choices:
accept an offer and let him go for less than the release clause, or keep him there against his will for another year. He'll be unmotivated, which will be bad for his own performance and the locker room atmosphere, and then in summer 2021 he'll still leave except this time for free.

Factoring his enormous wage, they'll likely lose money if they keep him.

I understand why he wants to leave, he asked Koeman what his project will be and Messi decided it was shit. He's 33 years old and has like 2 maybe 4 years max of world class football left, he doesn't have the time to wait for barca's much needed rejuvenation so he's going to a team more likely to win the CL now and not in 5 years(even doe man city never won it lmao).

Anyways, messi should understand that barca can't let the best player ever go for free to a European competitor. But barca too need to realize they fucked up and has to stop this "700 million or stay" BS, he's given barca so fucking much he doesn't deserve this shit!!

But im kinda hoping he stays and by January he's top of the league and his team are playing beautiful football and he regrets ever wanting to leave like neymar did with PSG last year lol

I thought Messi had something in his contract that says he can terminate and leave at the end of the season for free. Barcelona management is trying to argue that it is too late in the year or something. The season ended late though because of covid so most people agree with Messi.

Barca are saying he had until june 10 to say he was going to leave but he never did, even though he's been hinting at the idea for months
