Story was pretty unnecessary/straight garbage, gameplay mechanics were wonderful but wasted on two repetitive, empty open worlds. Mission structures became repetitive, especially in the second chapter.

It is the best game in the series. 4 concluded and satisfied the narrative, V concluded the sheer freedom of what the series could evolve to from a gameplay perspective, I mean yes it can always get even crazier but 4 and V are perfect compliments to each other.

I thought it was great, even the story but especially the themes and how it's presented. Has the best 'revenge' story in gaming imo. But I do think it is missing a lot of what makes MGS games memorable.

The gameplay is the best in the stealth genre tho.

Best intro in the series by far, even with the magic nonsense holding it back, but overall, it's not really my kind of game. I really hope Kojima drops the obsession with open world gameplay soon, because he's got a lot of great ideas otherwise.

I loved it and thought the premise of the story was interesting but the fact it was incomplete kind of ruined it at the end. Still a really strong game.

Bad story, few cutscenes, tons of missing content, unfinished campaign, unsatisfying 'main missions' that play like side missions, terrible location variety (nothing but desert/grassy desert, with a few one-or-two room buildings scattered throughout), recast Snake/Big Boss voice, unsatisfying retcons galore (Ocelot doesn't like torture, Big Boss didn't fight Snake in MG1, Sahelanthropus is somehow the oldest but also most advanced Metal Gear in existence but nobody remembers it or mentions it in the future, Skull Face poisoned Zero even though it made plenty of sense for Zero to have gotten old and senile naturally, etc. etc.), the whole "Venom Snake" twist, and just...so many things.

The graphics and gameplay engine are top tier, but the game surrounding all that beautiful technology and fine-tuning is just...not that good of a game, structurally.

Somewhat unrelated but why the fuck is MGS2 so hard? I swear when I played it as a teen it wasn't as ridiculous as it was when I recently replayed it. Those guards give you like a 4 frame window to chain bitchslap them or you get screwed over. Then you might as well just say fuckit when you get an alert. That or I'm just bad at it now lol >_>

I always used to play it on easy. Harder difficulties of MGS2 are pretty nuts, lol
