honestly i think all sung-through musicals just suck

I've yet to see it, and personally have nothing against Broadway, I like some songs, but where did seemingly sudden interest in Broadway or Musicals in general come from? It always seemed to be a somewhat niche genre reserved for, for lack of a better term, higher art types...Obviously known things like Lion King or whatever got notoriety from name recognition, but what made the average person so interested in Hamilton, and on a lesser stage stuff like Jersey Boys?

It was ok.

But yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of sung-through musicals either so that probably didn't help my enjoyment.

It's not sudden. You're probably just exposed to it more now. Wicked is nearly 20 years old and was massively popular. Book of Mormon is nearly 10 years old.

Everyone knew about Cats in the 90s too.

There's still the less mainstream stuff out there but there's always a Broadway show that makes its way to the mainstream every few years.

i guess that's true. it just feels like Hamilton is getting more praise from the "neutral" media consumer, but yea that's likely due to the social environment we're in now.

a musical has a play within it. Does not mean that a musical is a play.

Thats why the Tony award for best PLAY every year specifically states (non-musical)

I loved going to Broadway shows in New York. It's very touristy there obviously so most aren't artsy types there either. I checked out a comedy called A Gentlemen's Guide to Murder which was hilarious but was mostly overlooked until award season IIRC. Don't think it lasted too long. If I lived in New York I'd probably go to Broadway all the time. It's easy to get cheap tickets if you wait for rush ticket sales too. But yeah it's really not an artsy fartsy thing at all lol. I get that perception exists but I'm not really sure why. Maybe if you go and see Shakespeare adaptations or something.

In Sydney we primarily get the mainstream musical adaptations of movies or the really popular stuff like Book of Mormon, Cats and Rock of Ages. Basically the stuff that they'd make a movie of if given the opportunity lol

The play was cool but I had a harder time hearing the songs. I have the soundtrack and strictly from an audio perspective I preferred that.

Normally that wouldn't be an issue but given most the songs were rap you need to be able to hear the lyrics more.

They made Jesus Christ superstar into a movie. Some of the songs got mainstream radio play.

But yeah I mean Hamilton is the first big one since social media exploded
