Honestly I dont care how challenging your stupid game is supposed to be. I'm in my 30s. If your game allows me to lose an entire hour's progress because I can only save in a specific point then fuck your game >:/

You know what really annoys the fuck out of me? When you can save everywhere at any time in an FPS, but they don't let you name the saves. That's really the worst kick in the balls. edit: on PC I mean

God, that's such a mind fuck when I go play an older game and forget that autosaves weren't always a common thing.

And yet, at the same time, I'll bitch about autosave warnings before a game starts because they're so common now.

Also, if we're just bitching: PC games that don't include a "quit to desktop" option. If I need to fucking go, I don't really want to sit through another loading screen just to quit. This is really common in a lot of PC ports.

My take is similar, but slightly different:
a respectable game can have auto-saves, but it also must have manual saves. Only the player can create and update manual saves that, at any time, records all current progress: locations unlocked, inventory used or added, etc., in the game. Saves that continue at point-of-no-return checkpoints (immediately before level/area completion, boss battle, etc.) also are acceptable.

[ Don't look now; 6th-gen's checkpoint-only progress-saves games are giving the stink-eye. ]

Games like that cause me to play them less. You get to a save point and it's like "Well, that's a good spot to stop playing..."
