A couple of questions:

1) After nearly 10 years I finally understand what the phrase is "winter is coming" means, its a reference to the stark house motto

That being said, I still don't understand how it works. Only read the first book, are the seasons not like earth seasons, do they not have 4 seasons of summer, autumn, winter and spring? Or do they have them and they don't work like they do here, an average of 3 months for each season?

When they say summer has lasted 10 years, do they mean the entire season of summer without their being autumn or winter or spring in between?

They have the same seasons but the lengths are highly variable. So yes, summer alone can last a decade or longer

every season is longer but summer and winter are emphasized because of how bad winter can be and how a long summer can mean a long winter

They're being literal. Seasons work completely differently there. The current summer has literally lasted a decade. The younger kids like Bran and Arya have never seen any other season.

The seasons are irregular and can last for years, and I dont recall there being a Fall, just Winter, Summer, & Spring.

I dont recall there being an explanation as to how the maesters can tell when a season has ended.

There's a fall. Most of the books take place during it with summer officially being over at the start of the second book.

I think they mention it offhand a few times. It basically amounts to maesters all over the country sending in regular reports about things like the temperature, then the head maesters analyze it and decide.
