Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

If Shadow can get all 7 Chaos Emeralds active and go Super fast enough he might have a shot

but the writers decided to make Rainbow Dash OP as hell and I believe she is canon faster than Sonic? I don't know much about MLP

I'll vote Shadow but I can be swayed the other way if I see some good Rainbow Dash feats. Right now I'm assuming Shadow goes Super and gets behind Rainbow Dash before she knows what's up and he shoots her with his gun which I assume is now also in a Super state

I'm inclined to say Rainbow Dash is too fast for Shadow. She's definitely standing here one moment and then a mile off in the sky the next sort of fast

Somewhat depends though. If it is game only Shadow it might be closer though I'd still give him the win. If it is Archie / Composite Shadow then he utterly stomps her but that would be high tier minimum

Being able to fly when your opponent cannot is a big deal. Shadow cannot do a thing to RD when she is up that high (he has a handgun, not a sniper rifle). RD can also control the weather, which includes very dangerous things like tornadoes and lightning. Though he might be fast enough to avoid danger, Shadow's stamina is superhuman, but not limitless, eventually he will get worn down and need to rest. RD on the other hand can stand on and even sleep on clouds.

This match will go on for a long time but the eventual winner is Rainbow Dash

otherwise Rainbow Dash has way too much going in her favor here, she's not going to get hit by ordinary bullets or missiles

Well okay. She can create a Sonic Rainboom, which is basically a sonic boom, meaning she can break the sound barrier and Shadow's speed shouldn't be too much of a problem for her. Though I guess if you want to go with the calculations Death Battle used, she goes up to mach 10 for that based on the mach cone or something. And it's also good to show that she's pretty durable, since she can slam into the ground with it to help with barn demolition.

Her weather manipulation abilities include sustaining a miniature tornado on her own, and she can use clouds to generate lightning.

Also as mentioned earlier, she was in Death Battle. She defeated Starscream, not that it's canon or anything, just something to mention

Rainbow Dash can be very cocky and might not take Shadow seriously right out of the gate, which could enable him to get a decent hit in. However, she has pretty good durability - she's able to withstand lightning bolts without any serious damage:

She's also punched into a building by someone powerful enough to destroy a house, and she recovers basically instantly:

She can also move fast enough to generate tornadoes.

That said, I don't know if she has the strength needed to put down Shadow. Shadow can survive re-entry into orbit from space (granted, he was in a super form at the time). He could theoretically tag her if he slows down time - assuming he gets an emerald. If he does, he could slow Rainbow Dash enough to make it an even fight and shoot her, which would probably do more damage than being tossed into a house. If he doesn't, he's just not fast enough to tag her.

Abstain until the emerald situation is resolved.

Actually, hm...apparently Shadow is also sometimes shown stopping time without a Chaos Emerald? Is that accurate?

Shadow can teleport in Sonic Battle and Sonic 2006 without a Chaos Emerald, and has moments in Shadow where he can move fast enough toward an airborn enemy without it.

Hell, he can heal without an emerald. And worst comes to worst, he can remove his limiter rings and he'll skate through people and stuff.

Shadow as Rainbow Dash just doesn't impress me in anything but speed. Sonic characters outrunning weather has long since stopped being impressive, and Shadow can teleport sans emerald to make flight irrelevant. Even if he couldn't, he has healing that Dash doesn't, and Dash strikes me as too competitive to camp when she sees "wow look at this fast boy. What if I race him THEN kill him".
