Yeah, but I work for the government and that was part of the security clearance process. I don't think they did it when they hired me. Actually, if they did they wouldn't have found anything since I didn't have a credit card or any kind of loan then since I was straight out of college.

When i worked for an at-home program, I guess it was to check to see if they could trust you with their equipment and if you would return it after your employment.

Not that I know of. I know thats a thing some employers do, but I figured mostly in finance related careers or banking jobs.

Supposedly it's done there so that you don't sell security secrets.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, the nuclear scientists were poor and suddenly got awesome offers from shady people to sell their knowledge. Somehow that was an catalyst for credit checks here

Indebtedness / money problems are the number one reason for people to lose a clearance because of that.
