It's a fun game

But I don't get the "Look at the reflections and shadows!" crowd

Does that really matter?

From a technical standpoint, it matters a lot. Ray tracing has been science fiction for graphics enthusiasts since at least the 1990s. It used to take entire days to generate a single ray traced image. To be able to raytrace something at a playable frame rate is nothing short of cutting edge.

A perfect example of the difference between ray tracing and traditional screen space reflection is how anything reflected in a traditional game won't be something you can move or interact with in any meaningful way. A cup on the ground with a reflection cannot be moved. Anything reflected in glass will be permanently stuck in place, or the reflection won't make sense.

There are almost never accurate character reflections because of this.

You don't notice this sort of thing until you do at which time you'll never not notice it.

This really reminds me of the Orochi Tower in TSW for reals - (late game spoilers) https://wiki.crygaia.org/view/Orochi_Tower

Orochi is a giant conglomeration like Abstergo in the Secret World universe and they research the paranormal and interdimensional and try to (very ineptly) contain such paranormal outbreaks such as in this game, even sending people to Mars (you play such an astronaut in Moons of Madness). The Tower is their Headquarters and they're doing a ton of really weird ass experiments to discover and learn about. The gimmick is that you never get to choose the floor you want to go to each day because you just have a generic color-coded key.

I get 45fps with everything maxed and NO DLSS at 1080p (with RTX maxed) on my 2080 Max Q

DLSS cranks it up to 70fps for minimal visual loss

I'm sure a full RTX 2080 can easily hit 60fps at 1080p without DLSS

It is a hella weird aesthetic and it is also tripping me up. All the records and notes you read give some insight or explanation but I'm still not 100% sure I have it right.

Yeah, it explains it pretty immediately near the beginning IIRC, in a document. It's not super important to anything specific, so if you want to spoil yourself, see below.

basically any tech past the 80s stops working inside The Oldest House. The FBC isn't entirely sure why, but they think it might have to do with how fast tech moved past that point, causing individual pieces of tech to not get embedded into the collective unconscious deeply enough to become ...attuned with The Oldest House.

It's borderline pretentiously obfuscating, but as a fan of the X-Files from the 90s I'm cool with it.

Wake's voice actor. The actor in live-action bits was a different guy with Darling's actor's voice dubbed over.

hoping it gets more interesting (I'm about 2 hours in). Something is missing in terms of the narrative as I've been given no reason to care about all this nonsense jargon being thrown at me, and I have a high tolerance for nonsense jargon. Also the graphics aesthetically just aren't good. Still it's been worth playing just to see the magic of dlss in action

That feel when you see a level 05 security door but you just dash through the security window to get into the room so then you're wondering if there's actually some room between dimensions that remains out of reach >_>

The prohibited items list is something you can snag in the first ten seconds of the game, and it's funny because it starts out like a regular list of items at a secure facility (no smart phones, personal electronics, etc.) and then they have No2 pencils on there.

But the explanations are found later
