you can cover the hole in the ceiling with whatever, jerry-rigged trash bags are fine. you're just using it as a dust guard after all. but if water is still leaking from your roof and pooling there you're going to have issues. so either get some buckets, and be prepared to dump them if the leak is fast/heavy, or try tarping the roof until the landlord can come out and fix it.
Sounds like a plan.Just kind of sitting around at the moment with my roommate, trying to figure what to do next.

Ok
Guy

An entire sheet of drywall does not, absolutely does not just fucking fall off the God damn ceiling for no reason. He has massive water damage it's clear in the picture. Its something that would have been visible for weeks. His roof and shingles are also probably 5-10 years passed their lifetime and he has failed to maintain his roof.
I said it was a roof issue.......
Where did I say drywall just falls off the ceiling? I said its a clean break, meaning its an easy fix as far as drywall. The real issue is as I said the roof. Fixing a roof is much harder and expensive than a simple drywall fix.

Is this near a bathroom or kitchen? Hopefully it's as simple as the vent pipes on the roof needing to be re-sealed again

It's kind of close to the upstairs bathroom but not that close. Regarding the seal, from what we can get a peek at in the hole, that looks like that might be exactly the case.
