The side content they added to the DS version is mindless padding that you can ignore, though it contains the best equipment in the game. It's basically an excuse for them to try and tie Chrono Cross to Chrono trigger, and use Singing Mountain as a track. People prefer the SNES version because they "ruined" Magus and Frog with the new translations. Instead, I posit that they made the characters reflect their time periods a lot better. There is no fundamental reason why Frog was the only person in 600 AD to speak in Old English.
