there's less to keep track of, and a lot of storylines benefit with less padding, IMO

i hate the idea that self-contained stories are "padding" or "filler" and somehow lesser because of it.

lmao. You know broadcast TV still exists and their shows still have these 20+ episode seasons like Law and Order SVU and The Simpsons.

Yea like Miami Vice had 112 episodes in 5 seasons.

there are also comedies with overarching narratives and other comedy series with 10-13 episodes (but on cable/streaming services, admittedly)

A lot of shows are going lower than that. Despite their quality, it was kind of a joke that the last two seasons of Breaking Bad were only 8 episodes a piece

I can see the appeal of the spectrum. Some shows do really well with the self contained episodes that maybe give a little bit of development. Others do the ten to twelve and lay it on real thick. Some of my favorite shows have been 4-6 episode seasons with each episode being around 90
minutes. They can all work. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Problem of the week shows with a vague overarching plot (or none at all) can get away with longer seasons since each episode is mostly a self contained story. But more serious dramas where they spend an episode doing essentially nothing feel wasted.
