With teaching going virtual, parents are now getting the opportunity to sit in their childrens classrooms and observe their teachers. I definitely think we are going to see more stories like this throughout the year.

I just feel for the students, especially the Black students who have to see parents attack a teacher for expressing support and empathy. I know that sometimes parents are useful in addressing inequities amongst teachers and students at schools (Im thinking specifically about parents of students with special needs who, unfortunately, sometimes do need to advocate on behalf of their child against unjust practices) but... some parents just need to lay off >_>

I don't think it's cool to have potentially polarizing things in the class room unless the lesson directly involves it. It's just too distracting

Even in virtual school, teachers should still dress professionally imo. I still wore a suit and tie for job interviews on Zoom, and now that I'm hired still wear business casual for Zoom meetings when I'm on webcam because I feel it's appropriate.

If you're not on camera, fuck it, be naked for all I care, but when you're on camera it should be treated the same as being in the office.

The irony of this post is kinda funny. Plus having a Bachelor's in Health Science doesn't mean you know what you are talking about in the realm of education. Unless you have a teaching background.

I do however. And I don't have an issue with what she is wearing. First of all she's a charter school teacher. They have way more flexibility than a public or even private school with what they can and can't do.

As for the shirt itself. It is a shirt made in response to police brutality specifically towards black people. It is not attacking any group of marginalized people. It is not demonizing innocent people. It is demonizing a system. Which frankly teachers have been doing for far longer than just this recent era.

Now the only ONLY reasons to actually be upset over the shirt are:
  1. People who think any criticism of police action is an abomination of some sort. And act of betrayal. See: Any criticism of the military, US government, etc...
  2. People who think black people being murdered is a political issue aka racists.
  3. People who think teachers should be automatons who are meant to regurgitate facts and figures from textbooks without challenging the world view of their students.Which in return makes future generations stupider.
Note: I said challenging their world view, not changing them. We should not indoctrinate students into specific viewpoints specifically religion or politics or orientations. But we should help them learn how to see and respond to differing viewpoints and learn how to speak and empathize. That's one of the basic things of education.

I never claimed that my degree made me an authority on child education. What I took issue with is the baseless claims that I'm uneducated because I'm a Republican by a guy who, if we played by these "you can only post on CE about things you have devoted your life to" rules would only ever be able to post about Star Wars, Elder Scrolls and getting his accounts banned.
