Thot:

Actually Minmei was pretty cool. >_>

Overall I really enjoyed this! So salty it took me this long to get around to it, considering how much I loved Battlecry back in the day. The story ended up getting really interesting...and then really weird, and then interesting again. But something about these old shows compels me to overlook the silliness, like how Cam Clarke decides to marry an alien he just met. Actually, every time the Zentradi reacted to Earth culture was pure gold. That scene where Breetai was like, "You will demonstrate this kissing for us or I will crush you!" had me in stitches. Also, that scene where the alien was holding out her baby, Simba style, yelling "BEHOLD THE POWER OF PROTOCULTURE!". lmao

Speaking of the aliens, I'm kind of happy that a mostly peaceful resolution was found between the two species. For some reason I had found myself liking Breetai and Exadore, so I was really glad when they ended up becoming good guys. I also had to end up googling what protoculture was halfway through, since I apparently missed whatever scene explained it.The way they were talking about it early on, I thought it was some sort of ancient civilization that created the technology in the show. But it turns out its just some energy source. But then it turns out my original thought was what it actually was in the original Macross. >_>

Overall though, the star of the show and best girl was Lisa Hayes. Literally the perfect woman.

I've got a few things I want to catch up on before I move onto the Masters and New Generation arcs, but I really liked this. I'll probably end up watching the original Japanese shows after I'm done. >_>

While it wasn't the first anime I ever saw, it *was* the first anime that made me realize the genre wasn't just light-hearted and goofy stuff like Adventures of the Little Koala, Noozles, and Samurai Pizza Cats. It also began my lifetime love of mecha.

And Battlecry is an underrated gem of a game.

I read this as Robotrek and was ready to go off about SNES RPGs :/

That said, love the Macross series. Man, I really need to watch more mech shows.

Go make a topic about SNES rpgs! It feels like the only one anybody brings around here is Chrono Trigger. (And one user who claimed to love Secret of the Stars but I can't remember if they were memeing)

And yeah. Before this the only mecha shows I really watched were Zoids, G Gundam, and Gundam Wing. Never really payed attention to the genre outside Toonami, but after I move past the Robotech/Super Dimension canons I might dip my toes a bit deeper. (Mainly because Gunpla look really fun and I haven't built one since high school, but I also don't know what any of them are lol).

Im in the same boat. My local comics store is loaded with sick looking gunpla, but some of them are pre coloured and some you have to paint yourself and I can barely figure out which is which because the text is all in Japanese.

Most recent mech show I watched is the first half of Gundam AGE. It has its moments, but compared to the ones I grew up with like SEED and some of the more recent gritty ones like IBO, it felt a bit lacking. Still wanna finish it though. I also watch a lot of the ancient shows like Mazinger Z and such.

I actually made a topic about SNES RPGs a while back, but I think I alienated people by talking all kinds of Japan only games because I barely got any posts.

Aye, as Gundam goes I loved Wing & G, some of my other favorites are War in the Pocket and 08th MS Team. If you want other mecha, I'm putting Eureka Seven, The Big O, Escaflowne, Vandread and Gurren Lagann down as recommendations.

Also, have this totally relevant video.

Ohhhh I forgot about Big O! I saw a few episodes, I thought the gynoid partner was cute.

And holy crap at that video. >_>

Since this topic is bumped I may as well update that I said screw it and started the Masters arc. Im five episodes in and this is...a bit rough. <_< The plot feels almost non-existent and the characters dont really feel as solid as the Macross ones.

Like, by the end of the Macross pilot I felt like I was well-acquainted with Rick, Roy, Minmei, and even a little bit with the SDF1 crew.

Nobody in Southern Cross really has that same sort of presence when theyre on screen except for Dana. And her personality is almost schizophrenic with how it switches from ditzy school girl, to hard ass lieutenant, to Shinji Ikari self-doubt.

Like even that fatass Ben Dixon was better characterized. >_>

The hover bikes and the new transforming tanks are pretty cool tho. Not better than the veritechs, but I like them.

Up to episode 11. The plot is getting kind of silly. Its said that the Robotech masters sent the Zentradi to earth. But then in the same breath they say we never intended to hurt the earthlings, despite the Zentradi being an race exclusively bred for war. >_> Also it turns out all the aliens are clones? Some of the stuff going on is cool tho.

I think what hurts this arc the most is the over-reliance on the narrator to move the plot along (which im
assuming was the writers fighting to make the Japanese footage fit with the American mythos) That, and the lack of strong support characters. I still really only care about Dana. Bowies pretty cool, and some of the other characters have their moments, but theres no one nearly as interesting as Minmay, Lisa, Roy, Gloval, etc.

Other than that, its ok. Not terrible. Lots of shower scenes with Dana, which I would have really appreciated when I was in high school lmao. The general vibe from the environment is cool, especially whenever anything happens at night. Scenery looks like stuff youd see in those YouTube City Pop compilation videos lol.

Harmony Gold also made Robotech: The Movie (also known as Robotech: The Untold Story) by cutting together Megazone 23 Part I and Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, which takes place before the Masters Saga.
