it's been a while since I've seen the movie, but some people's takeaway was that since the lead guy killed his son, it served as the sacrifice they were talking about earlier in the movie, and that's why the military came in at the end to fight back the Mist and its monsters

Assuming you're talking about the movie, that actually wasn't King's ending. He did say he preferred it though.

I remember hating the ending when I first saw it, but over time I grew to appreciate it

lol, why would a "sacrifice" stopped interdimensional invasion?

was the nature of the Mist, or why the interdimensional rift opened ever explained?

i think the mist itself really just is normal fog that poured out with the other interdimensional horrors. it's implied that the military opened it somehow. i guess experimental stuff

i liked the ending a lot. what's also cool is how it leaves you with these questions, the military does show up to kill these things, so there's no intention to cover it up, i guess? or did it only spread to that one city? how will they explain it, and what's the sitrep? did they close whatever these things came from? is it gonna get worse? it gives you fun stuff to wonder

The military accidently opened a doorway/thinny into Todash Space, which is the dark void between different levels/alternate realities of the Dark Tower. Todash Space is full of monsters. It's also where Pennywise is from.

I'm pretty sure those are all just fan theories.

It's not true. The lady was crazy and she basically started a cult in the grocery store because of the insanity of the situation and creatures outside. Quickly it turned into wanting to sacrificing people.

Instead, it was a military experiment gone wrong.

I thought the ending was a cheap shot to pull at heartstrings. If there had been any sense of time passing between the deaths in the car and the arrival of the military, I don't think I would have hated it (or at least hated it as much). It just felt too manipulative to have safety appear right after making the choices he did.
