This game was way better than it had any right to be.

It was a turn based RPG where you could equip armour upgrades and level up to learn new spells to use in combat. Hogwarts was fully explorable and had a ton of secret passages to use as shortcuts.

Played the shit out of it as a kid.

It looked so cheaply made but you can tell the developers really put their heart into it. It was like they were all genuine Harry Potter fans, which was crazy given how new Harry Potter was at the time.

I had a PC version, too. I didn't like it. I just looked it up, the PC version was similar but still different from the PS1 version. Both had poor reviews.

The GBC was completely different and was by far the best received version, receiving good to excellent reviews.

There was a GBA version that was also completely different, and received very polarized reviews.

Lastly, they made one later for Gamecube/PS2/Xbox that was yet another completely different game, and was not well received at all.

So basically they licensed out 5 different versions of a game made about one book. I wonder if that's a record.

Oh thats cool, I wish I had tried the GBC version it sounds awesome.

they go do the Avengers route and just reboot a video game version with all new voice actors, and make it an RPG, maybe an action RPG

I played through the GBC game today. Took only a few hours.

Every bit as good as I remembered, but it is totally unforgiving early on unless you grind. Equipment upgrades are also very expensive. They're really useful, but you lose them when you finish the game and it starts from the beginning again (although you keep your experience and levels gained). I saved up for some extremely expensive robes, and then one of the last enemies I beat randomly dropped even better robes (which I don't remember ever happening before). It felt like I wasted my money.

Another shame is that you lose the spells you've learned. I spent a lot of time grinding to learn the new spells, and then you lose them.

Lastly, the story really jumps around. You will need to have either read the book (which the game follows quite well) or watched the movie to fill in a lot of details. Harry seemingly just suddenly understands things that never get explained to him "on screen" in the game.

All in all, I'd give it 8.5/10. Highly recommend.

I probably skipped it since I probably assumed it was an action game. I only played RPGs for the GBC.

I never played that one, but did own Chamber of Secrets. It has three playable characters, while I heard the original was limited to Harry. I did quite a few repeats trying to find the last missing card, never did though.

Only Harry Potter game I owned was the one on GameCube. I think it was chamber of secrets? Anyways I remember I would spend sooo much time on my broom flying around Hogwarts.

Unfortunately my disc was scratched and it would always crash at a certain point preventing be from finishing it.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was, and now what I'm with isn't it. And what's "it" seems weird and scary to me.

Color me intrigued. Certainly not what I'd expect.

tbh, one of these days I want to go back and replay Magi-Nation. It's kinda funny that a third-rate CCG spawned a better RPG than its more prominent competitors.
