For it to be either of those, it has to be done toward someone who is not expecting it nor engaging in an activity that could result in it.

The black guy is literally walking away and has to do a complete turnaround just to connect.

The white guy is the aggressor and if directly facing the three black guys. He is actively engaging in violent speech and aggressive body language. Hell he squared up to them.

The only reason the punch was as effective as it was is because the guy was arrogant and didn't try any sort of defense. He left himself wide open.

If someone attacks you first, they escalated it. Thats what made it go from verbal to physical.

In the UK, where this happened, Assault is literally making somebody apprehend violence. You don't have to touch somebody to assault them, that's battery.
