Union members were apoplectic. The citys EMTs and paramedics responded to record call volume in March and early April, peaking at some 6,500 calls a day. They weren't immune to COVID, either. At the worst of the crisis, nearly one in four were out sick. Oren Barzilay, president of FDNY EMS local 257 said that nine union members had died from COVID as a result of working during the pandemic. "Even with the threat of a second wave of COVID-19 looming and two recent outbreaks in Brooklyn, Bill de Blasio and his team at City Hall wants to balance the city's budget on our backs, eliminating some 400 emergency medical responder positions and placing every New Yorkers life at risk," Barzilay told NBC News. "Yesterday, we were praised as heroes, essential workers saving lives. Today, the city government treats us like zeros," his statement continued. "New Yorkers who lived through this deadly pandemic know otherwise."

Yeah it fucked up. Only silver lining is at least The medical workers were labeled essential employees so they probably worked this entire time. Even if they didn't get hazard pay. Hopefully they saved up.

Are you saying New York doesn't deserve praise for getting the virus under control? Lets look at the rest of the country vs New York.


A month or so ago New York was at 100,000 active cases, they're about to go under 60,000 active cases in a few days. They will be outside the top 10 states in terms of active cases despite being 4th in population and having the most densely populated city in the country.

This is horrendous and de blasio should be ashamed, but New York deserves praise for having getting the virus under control while also having to deal with the problems NYC brings when it comes to this pandemic.

They do know that the Fall is right around the corner and that the flu and covid will be teaming up, right?
