They cost more to make than they're worth, waste of precious zinc (see Simpsons video below) and copper (the mineral not the slang for police officer)

Because pennies have a "velocity" (number of times it is traded in cash transactions) that essentially pays for itself.

If you removed the penny, all you'd be doing would be increasing the price of everything up to the nearest nickel. Couple that over the span of God only knows how many billions of transactions and you'd easily have Americans spending more than the cost of making pennies annually extra.

Why does it even matter if the price of everything is going to inflate anyways?

Cash in general is a waste. It's filthy as fuck and with tap & pay on debit cards, there's literally no need.

Some old person gave me a dirty look because I tap & paid for something that was $0.20 the other day. Get with the times, cave man. Cash is NOT king.

Because it would increase the rate of inflation. Inflation is generally part of a normal and healthy economy, but when the rate gets too high it's a problem.

Would people really get that bent out of shape if something went from $49.99 to $50 even?

The lowest coin in Australia is 5c coin. If paying cash, if something is $2.22, we pay $2.20. If it's $2.23, we pay $2.25.

Paying via debit/credit card, you pay the exact amount.

Because he most likely pays for the transaction fee per card transactions instead of having the customer pay, therefore such a low sum means he's most likely losing money in that transaction.

Which is why some places have a minimum purchase requirement for card.

Only when paying with cash. The way we did it in Canada is X.03/04 gets rounded up X.01/02 gets rounded down anything paid by credit or debit is the exact price.

We really should get rid of the penny. Sounds like Canada and other countries figured out an intelligent way to do it. On the rare occasion I use cash I don't want to see a penny, ever.

It's entirely perception based, customers somehow see $39.99 as cheaper than $40.00. It's like psychological pricing
