I, myself, do not actually believe that he is misunderstood. But why is he still allowed to make films, and why do we still allow his movies on TV (some of which are pretty bad, to be brutally honest)?

The man has a lot of demons and is rather clearly not a good person. He is still a good actor and film maker. So how much you want to support his works is up to you.
As far as why do people still watch his works? Well no film is a one-person show. Every movie is a collaborative effort of hundreds of people. Should their work not be allowed to be aired because Mel Gibson is a piece of shit? --- *Gheb is my other account* ... Copied to Clipboard!
