New York State's infection rate has been below 1 percent positive for ten consecutive days and accordingly, the State will permit local elected officials to allow gyms in their locality to reopen. Starting August 24th, gyms and fitness centers can reopen at 33 percent capacity while enforcing rigorous safety protocols, including requiring masks be worn at all times. Gym owners and all clients must take health guidelines seriously, or gym reopening can be rolled back. Local health departments are required to strictly enforce the state guidelines to ensure gyms and fitness centers reopen safely and protect the public health. Read New York's full guidance on gym reopening here.

I assume this will be like bars. Ignore the rules, and they will shut you right back down. I'm fine with masks, but I wouldn't want to work out in one. I think that will be the thing that will end up closing some gyms, people will ignore that rule. I'll stick to bike riding and cutting wood.

Working out in a mask is ok unless you're doing cardio or very intense weightlifting. Most people on the cardio equipment at my gym tend to at least pull their mask under their nose. I think they should block all the cardio equipment, but I guess then they'd lose half their members.

I sometimes wonder why people even use Gyms.
When I see people pulling in their car to a Gym I wonder how many of them could have Biked there.

But ya, give me a Hike or Swiming in a Lake any day over going to a Gym.

Because NYC has loads of hiking trails and everyone has a lake they can hop into within 10 minutes of home.

I understand that. But NYS is more than NYC.
But also people in the cities tend to be more fit than people who spend half their day commuting to and from their 'bedroom communities.'

Transportation/ease of access. Not everyone has a car or the luxury of traveling an hour upstate.

When I speak of spending half of their day in a car, I don't say that is if it were a luxury.

My Gym is actually pretty good about social distancing

Half the machines are switched off, half the lockers are out of use, the non electric machines are spread apart and they won't let people in if it's too full.

They also have an app which tells you how busy the gym is both at present and in general to advise what times to come.

And cleaning stuff is everywhere.

It can be done.

Convenience. The gym has resistance machines, free weights, bikes, stairmasters and treadmills (and a pool, depending on the gym). And it's all in a temperature controlled space, so you aren't affected by inclement weather conditions.

Yes, actual running/biking is better than treadmills and stationery bikes, but it's not always feasible.

I understand that and am not trying to be a dick.
But in the places where outdoor activities are available, I can't see going to a gym.

genius idea, so everyone congregates around the same equipment, touches and breathes on the same stuff.

Fantastic! So, how long until they get shut down again because of an outbreak? 2 weeks? 2.5?

Have you ever been to a gym in your life?

Everyone congregating around 1 treadmil or 1 locker doesn't make any sense.

I don't think you were being a dick. Just explaining why I prefer gyms lol.

That said, I'm staying far away from gyms until social distancing is no longer needed. So probably won't be until 2021.

that makes no sense. But when you limit the amount of equipment that is useable, thats basically what you're doing. Making people use the same machines.

I go to the gym because outdoor activities don't build mass in the same way. I also hike, bike, and swim in a river; but I want to be buff, not just fit.

You can't build muscle easily that way. If all you do is run on the hamster wheel at the gym, then yea I agree it's kind of pointless.

I've used rocks that I collected on a hike a weight before.
