Over a good neighborhood. This is weird to me because they made more than enough money to live in a good neighborhood and send their kids to the good schools in the neighborhood.

Why would they prefer to live in the ghetto or a poor neighborhood? They would have better neighbors and a better environment overall

not really. I would feel uncomfortable living in one of the more affluent suburbs even if i could afford it.

if he feels safe and finds his neighborhood ok then nothing wrong with that. plus the good neighborhood iis probably further away from his work

why would you feel uncomfortable in an affluent neighborhood though? youd have better neighbors and better schools in the area

on top of that, little to no risk of crime or violence

Usually comes from a place of being accustomed to that way of life, & not willing to branch out. Hood communities also have a bit of "crab mentality" where it's looked down upon to consider yourself better or ashamed of it.

Living in the hood feels more like a community. Maybe due to everyone being cramped in a tiny space? Nobodys snitching or calling the HOA. Maybe its a race thing? Being Mexican in a Mexican neighborhood, we value family and community. White people I went to school with were all about being independent and moving out of your parents ASAP. Goodbye to everyone you grew up with.

"Better neighbors" is questionable. If you grew up in the hood, you know how to handle it, how things work. Who knows how a sheltered community would react to any given non-issue that they're unfamiliar with?

Do they have family there? That can be a factor, and why the money might not be enough. They probably wouldn't want to leave them behind.

a professor at the college that I went to is the same way.

he's been living in a lower middle-class community for much of his life due to the historical importance that it has had for the black community in the city.

he's always been an activist, though, and is a part of different programs aimed to improve the black and minority experience in the area.

You're not in danger if you don't know anyone, regardless of location, most crime is personal
