Street Fighter is Bloodsport with anime characters and Mortal Kombat is Enter the Dragon with magic.

It should be a simple conversion... except for how many characters there are and how convoluted the mythology for each series has become. A Mortal Kombat movie made twenty years ago could get by with the cast of the first game and one or two characters from the sequels. Today, it's impossible to sift through all of the characters to find the right ones to appear in a movie.

Street Fighter could be done if you religiously stuck to the 12 characters from Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior. Ryu, Chun-Li, and Guile are our main three characters. M. Bison and Sagat are our villains. Ken has a cameo fight against Ryu before being injured by M. Bison. The rest appear as opponents within the tournament and receive no individual focus as characters.

It could be done and done well. But what about the kids who have only played Street Fighter IV or Street Fighter V? Would they want to see a movie that had no Akuma, Ibuki, Elena, etc.?

Yes, but none that were truly good. Mortal Kombat 1 is pretty decent though. It's no masterpiece, but it's probably still the best movie based on a video game.

(Unless you consider Wreck-It Ralph to be based on Donkey Kong or Wrecking Crew.)
